TAKE ACTION: It's quick & easy to do: Here are the 3 main Bee related Petitions currently lodged at the official website of No.10 Downing Street. Please sign and pass on.
If you would like to contribute towards helping fight against the plight of our humble British bee, one of the easiest things one can do is go and sign one of the current petitions at the official No.10 Downing Street website.
Each petition will take less than 2 minutes to sign, they are so easy to do and can contribute enormously towards significant change.
1. Petition to provide more funding for research into bee health and colony collapse disorder (CCD)http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/Honeybees/#detail
“Bees are dying rapidly, especially honey bees. We ALL need them to pollinate our plants for food and other important things. Most plants and food crops need pollinating. If we lose our bees we will have to do what happened in a part of Japan, where people pollinate pear trees, which is costly and very time consuming. The bees carry out this service admirably, and for free. Can you imagine a world without them? So it is absolutely crucial we make a big effort to help the bees. MORE FUNDS ARE DESPERATELY NEEDED FOR THIS.”
2. Petition to abolish VAT on Beekeeping Equipment to encourage more beekeeping http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/savethehoneybee/
“Albert Einstein once said that if bees disappeared, man would have only four years of life left to live! Honey bees are now really struggling to survive with many colonies dying out. Although the Government is giving some funding to the National Bee Unit, why on earth is VAT charged on beekeeping equipment? If anything, a grant should be given to encourage more people to keep bees.”
3. Petition to ban the use of Neonicotinoid insecticides on crops grown within the United Kingdom http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/BeeDeath/#detail
“A plethora of recent studies from Italy, Germany, America etc. are implicating Neonicotinoid insecticides (an insect nerve poison) in causing sub-lethal and lethal affects to honeybee's exposed to plants grown from seeds coated in Neonicotinoid insecticide or treated with Neonicotinoid insecticide - typically maize, sunflower and rapeseed - these sub-lethal effects, affect the bee's ability to orient itself and return to the colony; additionally it is likely the detrimental effects are compounded synergistically as the bee is weakened and becomes more susceptible to natural disease, parasitic fungi and parasites such as varroa mite - implicated in the world wide colony collapse disorder (CCD) we are currently experiencing. Neonicitinoid insecticides have recently been banned in other European countries and are being reviewed in the US - home of the corporations pushing these systemic insecticides.”
